Pokelike Elite Four Guide: Choose Your Story League
Direct answer
Choose your Story region first: Kanto ends with Gary (25 opposing Pokémon, levels 53–65); Johto ends with Lance (25, levels 85–90); Hoenn ends with Steven (26, levels 78–97). Each is four Elite Four battles plus the champion. Before every trainer, use the preparation screen to inspect the next team, reorder yours and adjust items. Preserve answers for mixed teams and the final battle; a leader’s type label is not a complete counter plan.

Choose your region and open the exact League plan
This guide covers Pokelike’s Story / Classic campaigns, not Battle Tower or the main-series Pokémon games. All counts below include the champion. Lance is Kanto’s fourth Elite Four trainer but Johto’s champion; Hoenn ends with Steven, not Wallace.

| Story region | Battle order | Opposing Pokémon / levels | What changes your plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kanto / Gen 1 | Lorelei → Bruno → Agatha → Lance → Gary | 25 / 53–65 | Five opponents per trainer. Gary ends with level-65 Charizard. In ordinary Kanto, only each enemy team’s ace retains its held item. |
| Johto / Gen 2 | Will → Koga → Bruno → Karen → Lance | 25 / 85–90 | Five per trainer. Lance has Gyarados, Aerodactyl and three Dragonite: preserve Electric and Ice roles for that ending. |
| Hoenn / Gen 3 | Sidney → Phoebe → Glacia → Drake → Steven | 26 / 78–97 | Five per Elite Four trainer, then Steven’s six at 93–97. Abilities remain active; the champion is a large level jump from Drake’s level-86 ace. |
Before entering: prepare for the ending, not just the first trainer

- Find the last opponent your team cannot currently handle. Kanto needs a Gary plan after Lance; Johto needs enough Ice pressure for three Dragonite; Hoenn needs a developed finisher for level-97 Metagross. Spend the final approach strengthening that role while keeping your lead viable.
- Check the attack actually available, its physical or special category, remaining HP and held item. A species having two types does not guarantee it will use both attack types. A type item helps an eligible attack; it does not create every move on every Pokémon.
- Keep overlapping roles where they work. One trained member may cover two jobs, but do not replace the only late-battle answer with an underlevelled counter just to make the opening easier.
- Inspect supplies before starting. Preparation is a chance to use your available equipment and usable items; it is not a guaranteed new item or catch opportunity. Opponent levels below are reference points, not minimum player levels or a promised winning margin.
Between trainers: use the preparation screen
All three regional League flows provide preparation before each trainer. Ordinary boss-preview settings do not remove League preparation. Inspect the next lineup, drag to change your order, and use held-item or bag controls to equip, swap or unequip before continuing.
Preparation itself does not provide a free full-team heal. If you have Sacred Ash, selecting an injured or fainted member restores that one member to full HP and consumes the item. Recheck inventory and HP after every battle. Ordinary level gains can add HP as maximum HP increases, but a fainted participant does not revive merely by gaining a level.
Reset your plan for the next trainer rather than leaving the previous specialist in front. Bring the required attacker forward only when it has the HP and actual attack to do the job, and preserve a backup for the final threats.

| Region / obstacle | Misleading shortcut | Better decision |
|---|---|---|
| Kanto — Lorelei | “Ice trainer means a Fire sweep.” | Four members are Water types; Electric handles them, while Jynx needs another answer such as Fire or Dark. |
| Kanto — Bruno and Gary | “Use one counter for the trainer label.” | Bruno’s two Onix need Water/Grass; his Fighting members favor Psychic/Flying. Gary mixes birds, Alakazam, Rhydon and Exeggutor before Charizard. Carry complementary jobs. |
| Johto — Karen | “Karen is all Dark.” | Vileplume and Gengar interrupt that assumption. Psychic cannot hit the actual Dark members, while Water/Ground/Fighting is useful for closing Houndoom. |
| Johto — Lance | “Electric handles the whole Flying team.” | Electric is 4× against Gyarados and 2× against Aerodactyl, but only neutral against Dragonite. Ice is 4× against all three Dragonite. |
| Hoenn — Phoebe and Glacia | “Dark beats every Ghost; Fire beats every Ice.” | Sableye’s Dark/Ghost typing makes Dark neutral; Fairy is super-effective. Glacia’s Water/Ice members take neutral Fire damage, while Fighting remains super-effective. |
| Hoenn — Steven | “Fighting or Ground beats a Steel champion.” | Skarmory is immune to Ground; Cradily is not weak to Water/Grass; Fighting is neutral against Metagross. Keep separate answers and enough HP for the level-97 finish. |
Choose roles without forcing six exact Pokémon
These are strategy recommendations from the current opponent teams and type matchups, not measured win-rate rankings. Use the region guide for available catches and specific replacements. A weaker new specialist may lose before exploiting its type advantage.

| Attack job | Where it earns a place | Tradeoff to check |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | Kanto’s Water/Flying targets; Johto’s Gyarados and Aerodactyl. | It does not replace Ice for Dragonite and cannot damage Ground targets such as Rhydon. |
| Ice | Both Lance lineups and Hoenn’s Drake. | Keep the user healthy through earlier fights. Hoenn still needs a Steven answer after Drake. |
| Dark / Psychic | Dark works broadly against Johto’s Will and most of Hoenn’s Phoebe; Psychic helps Kanto’s Agatha and Johto’s Fighting/Poison opponents. | Dark is only neutral into Sableye. Psychic users can fear Ghost damage and cannot hit Dark opponents. |
| Water / Grass | Kanto’s Onix and Rhydon; selected Rock/Ground targets elsewhere. | Do not generalize that advantage to Hoenn’s Cradily, whose Grass typing cancels the expected Water/Grass weakness. |
| Fire / Fighting / Fairy | Fire breaks Forretress; Fighting helps Hoenn’s Sidney and Glacia; Fairy helps Sableye and Dragon targets. | These are separate options, not one universal sweep. Compare the actual attack category, abilities, HP and next target before equipping. |

- Lose to an immunity or poor matchup: change the actual attack or assigned member, not just its level. Check the regional roster for the specific opponent that stops you.
- Reach the champion with the right counter fainted: preserve that member earlier, change order at preparation, and use available recovery deliberately. Do not assume the next screen restores it.
- Reach Steven but cannot finish: compare your ending against his 93–97 team, not only Drake’s 83–86 team. Plan resources for six champion opponents.
- Have a useful substitute but lack levels: train the role earlier on the next attempt rather than rebuilding the whole team immediately before the League. The regional guides show capture windows and alternatives.
What this guide is based on
The regional teams, levels, item rules and preparation behavior come from the official public client inspected on September 17, 2026. Counts are calculated from those fixed Story templates. Counter choices and role priorities are our analysis of those facts and type relationships. This is not a recorded full clear, a promise about random encounters or a guide to every special mode.
